Sunday December 7th in 1941, Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Empire of Japan. This caused the end of hundreds of lives, and scarred the United States forever. Hawaii holds a plethora of historical landmarks and learning opportunities because of this event in history. This attack sank the U.S.S. Arizona, the ship held several soldiers and was completely destroyed. An 184 foot memorial now stands to commemorate the loss of many American soldiers. It has three separate chambers, including an entry room, an assembly room, and a central area for ceremonies and general observation. There is also a shrine room where the names of those who lost their lives are engraved on a marble slab.
President Dwight D. Eisenhower aided in the victory of allies in Europe during WWI, and approved the creation of the Pearl Harbor Memorial. This memorial draws many to the beautiful state of Hawaii. Not only are the beaches and weather exquisite, but there are hundreds of historical learning tours that many participate in during their stay. Hawaii consists of eight main islands, several small islets, and undersea seamounts in the North Pacific Ocean.
The ability to tour Pearl Harbor is something every American should take advantage of. Not only is it incredibly interesting, but the area is beautiful. There are several types of guided tours available, or you can choose to experience it for yourself. Although education tours may not seem like loads of fun, this one is incredibly interesting and will keep you engaged the entire way through.
Pearl Harbor was originally a deep embayment called Wai Nomi, which means pearl water.

A Dole Plantation tour is a great idea for those with little ones, it will excite your kids and keep you interested as well. Seeing where the fruit on the shelves at home is grown is another great learning experience for many of us. If the Pearl harbor tour is a little too intense for your taste, the Dole Plantation tour is a great second option.
While you are in paradise, take advantage of the educational opportunities. Seeing sites like Pearl Harbor firsthand is something many of us never get the opportunity to experience. Although it may seem boring during thought, while you are there you will find yourself in a time warp.
